Frequent unprotected sexual intercourse results in pregnancy for 50% of couples within 3 months, 75% of couples within 6 months and 90% of couples within 1 year. Infertility is therefore defined as the inability of a couple to achieve pregnancy after 1 year of unprotected sexual intercourse.
Infertility can be caused by low sperm production and problems with sperm delivery; problems with ovulation, problems with the fallopian tubes resulting from blockage of the tubes; abnormal mucous in the birth canal.
At NOVA Surgery Center, we encourage patients who want to conceive to have frequent intercourse when conception is most likely to occur. We discourage excessive use of caffeine and tobacco since both impair fertility. If these measures do not result in pregnancy after a year then we evaluate both partners to determine the cause of their infertility.
Evaluation for infertility begins with history taking, physical examination and counselling. Men are evaluated for sperm disorders and women are evaluated for ovulation problems, tubal disorders and pelvic lesions. We specialize in Laproscopic(key hole) surgery and hysteroscopy. With these two procedures, we are often able to resolve most unexplained infertility issues.
If a couple decides to prevent pregnancy, we offer contraception to prevent pregnancy temporarily. We offer a full array of contraceptive options including various hormonal methods (eg birth control pills, implants, IUD) and barrier methods (eg condoms).
We also offer
sterilization for permanent prevention of pregnancy. Again we use a laproscopic approach for this. Our procedures allow the patient to have the surgery and go home in a matter of hours and return to work in a few days.
